Supplement Rabbit Food With Timothy Hay

Rabbits as well as guinea pigs and chinchillas need to be fed a good healthy diet of nutritious food but it is also important to provide them with plenty of roughage as well. Of course not all the hay available at the pet store is made the same. Just as many rabbit foods are made with filler and not completely healthy many hays on the shelf are not made with the best grasses. Pet owners need to make sure the hay they are providing their small pet is of the highest quality for the most benefit to their pet.
While some consider hay to be a rabbit treat this is not really the truth since it is so essential to their health it is a necessity. Hay provides the fiber rich roughage that rabbits, chinchillas and other small animals need for proper digestion. This fiber helps these small animals move food through their digestive system especially in the large and small intestine.

Hay also provides the added benefit of helping to wear down the front teeth of small pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs. The teeth on these herbivores do not stop growing so rabbit chews and things that will keep them worn off are essential for keeping them from getting too long.

Timothy hay is more than just the fiber that a rabbit needs for digestion though. Since this type of hay is made with quality grasses it also offers nutritional benefits as well. This hay will provide herbivores like rabbits not only fiber but also calories as well that will help keep them full and happy. While rabbit food should be measured out and controlled in order to keep the rabbit from gaining too much weight hay on the other hand should be provided in unlimited amounts for all the benefits it offer
