AVOIDING THE UNPLEASANT SMELL OF RABBIT URINE…

regular cleaning is really the only way to deal with this problem. The litter tray ideally should be changed every twenty-four hours. If you can manage twice a day then this is even better. As well as emptying every day and wiping over I steam clean my rabbit litter tray every week. Always check underneath the litter tray for spills…

  1. I agree that its absolutely critical to keep litter trays clean and hence hygienic. Different litter materials behave differently, some need changing daily and some can be spot cleaned in between complete changes. The question of smell comes down to how effective the litter is at absorbing urine before it starts breaking dowm to produce ammonia (bad smell). The faster it is absorbed the less smell there is. So I think its a combination of keeping the tray clean with the help of the right litter.

  2. Keeping the litter tray clean is important for overall hygiene as well as avoiding the smell of urine. Different litter materials act in different ways, some need changing daily and some can be spot cleaned in between less frequent changes provided it is doing the job you want it to do. The bad smell comes from urine that is not absorbed and is broken down to ammonia, so you want a litter that absorbs a lot, quickly. So I would say avoiding the unpleasant smell is a combination of keeping the tray clean and using the right litter.
