Farplace Animal rescue look after any animal that comes to them in need, providing they have space for them. Consequently they have a wide variety of animals including goats, chickens, ferrets, dogs and cats to name but a few. Taking in any animal that comes to them is what any animal lover (or indeed any humane person) would do however this means that they are constantly stretching their resources.

Rescue centres across the country are usually the final hope for many animals. They do a huge amount of good work in rehabilitating thousands of animals each year, however no-matter how many animals they rescue there always seems to be more needing help. In response to this Farplace, like other rescue centres, are actively promoting animal welfare education.

However in many cases the priority is (quite naturally) placed on re-habilitating and caring for the rescued animals they do take in so animal welfare education and campaigns do not have enough time and resources given to them as we would wish. Sadly of course this means that the rescue centres are continuing to be overstretched because there is still animal neglect that isn’t treated at the root cause.

If you’d like to find out more about Farplace Animal Rescue you can visit their website at http://www.farplace.co.uk or if you’re interested in re-homing one of their animals you can call them on 01388 517397

    orc.switchMapControl(true, jQuery.GoogleMapOrchestrator.ControlType.SCALE);
    orc.switchMapControl(true, jQuery.GoogleMapOrchestrator.ControlType.STREETVIEW);
    orc.updateInitLocationMarker("Bishop Auckland, County Durham", jQuery.GoogleMapOrchestrator.AnimationType.DROP);
    orc.buildInitLocationMarker(true);

You will need to contact the rescue centre to find out about their homing policy, many rescue centres perform home checks on adopters. Although we often help people find homes for their rabbits, we are not a rescue centre and have no facilities for taking rabbits in ourselves. If you own a rescue centre and would like us to feature it please send us your details.

Unknowingly they break up families and separate mother rabbits from their babies in an effort to “save” them. The fact is that rabbit’s nurse only once a day – and in the wild spend most of the day away from offspring in order to lead predators away from the nest… but if you don’t know this it is an easy mistake to make…

Undetected dental problems in rabbits are a major cause of more serious illnesses which develop due to the pain and stress of sore teeth and jaw. Overgrown teeth are one of those things that can seem to happen out of the blue but in fact are something that happens over the course of time. By having regular checks you can save your bunny from severe distress…

Multocida or as it is more commonly known the snuffles. Also if removed from sources of infection early, a rabbit may never acquire P. multocida infection. But this is not all because not all rabbits with P. multocida get sick. But this is not say that you must underestimate it. P. multocida is still the most common cause of respiratory disease, primarily rhinitis, in rabbits and some P. multocida strains are more virulent than others. Symptoms of this are what you might expect with a disease commonly called the snuffles but you may read a full description at the link included.

If you think your rabbit has this condition then seek expert advice immediately.

What do you know about the snuffles??? Get in touch now and share your experiences…

Like all rescue centres, the Animals in Distress centre started of on a small scale. Many centres are established by a single individual or a small group of friends looking after a couple of animals in their own homes. However because animals are always in need they can grow very rapidly which can create problems.

The Animals in Distress Rescue centre was formed by Mrs Georgina Lang, Mrs Eileen Hunt and Mrs Muriel Selick whom started looking after peoples dogs when they went into hospital. This quickly grew into a full time rescue operation as they began to take in animals that required long term care. Consequently they have outgrown there previous facilities and have now redeveloped there site so that it includes 28 boarding kennels, with heated spacious accommodation, a double storey cattery with heated beds and special care unit for dogs. They also have plans drawn up to increase the size of the rabbit enclosure, funds permitting.

Animals in Distress have been relatively fortunate in being able to develop there facilities, many centres simply do not have the room to develop. Of course this isn’t the only factor; with increased size comes increased running costs. This creates a tricky dilemma for the people running rescue centres…do they increase the size of the centre to meet the demand for space but possibly overstretch the resources of time, staff/volunteers and money resulting in less quality one to one care for the animals or do they stay small and offer more individual tailored care to the animals but face the fact that they wont be able to help as many animals as they would like?

If you would like to know more about the Animals in Distress Rescue centre you can find out more by visiting there website at http://www.animalsindistress.uk.com/index.php or alternatively you can call them on 01803 812121
